Active Minds

In collaboration with the University Counseling and Testing Center, the newly established UO chapter of Active Minds presents “Stomp Out Stigma Week” from May 28th-June 1st. This week of events will be dedicated to changing the conversation about mental health on campus. Active Minds is a national organization committed to raising students’ awareness of mental health on college campuses and our UO Active Minds chapter hopes to reduce the stigmas associated with mental health issues and provide students knowledge about resources to seek help when needed. With the support of the UCTC, Active Minds’ “Stomp Out Stigma Week” will feature various events to create a more open dialogue with students about mental health issues and improve upon ways students can support one another.

Active Minds will also be teaming up with the UO Suicide Prevention Team for Suicide Awareness Day, which will be held during the same week. The Suicide Prevention Team provides education, information, and resources to our campus through faculty, staff, and student trainings.

Career Center

#careerinsights: discover the possibilities

The Career Center’s Employer Development Team, in partnership with University Housing, is pulling together a list of dynamically diverse and interesting professionals who will be connecting with students at our third annual themed panel workshop, #careerinsights: discover the possibilities, which takes place on Wednesday, May 16th, at the Ford Alumni Center. The event is sponsored by Target Stores and Oregon Community Credit Union.

The panel themes are:

  1. Careers in Healing and Helping Others
  2. Careers in Developing and Building Your Own Business
  3. Careers in Managing People and Projects
  4. Careers in Researching, Analyzing, and Problem Solving
  5. Career in Performing and Designing
  6. Careers in Planning and Organizing
  7. Careers in Sustaining the Environment
  8. Careers in Writing and Communicating

For each of these interest areas we are bringing in professionals such as Nike shoe designer Wilson Smith, Eugene Airport Director of Communications Cathryn Stephens, Disney Theme Park Designer Don Carson, Playworks Senior Producer Shelby Wills, and President of Grape Solar, Ocean Yuan. Each panel will have four professionals (for a total of 32 really interesting stories) discussing how they progressed from graduation to their current position, and passing along the wisdom they picked up along the way.

After the initial keynote presentation, students will have a chance to choose and attend two of the panels during the evening. While this event is officially part of the Sophomore Experience, it’s open to all students. This has been an especially well-received event in the past and is promising to be even more dynamic this year.

Graduates today face an average of six career changes per person. We’re hoping students will find inspiration at the event and discover the possibilities of their future.

EMU

EMU Nights

For the first time in 20 years, beer and wine flowed at the EMU. On April 5th, the EMU hosted a “Pub Night” as part of an ongoing effort to increase late-night programming on campus. With the collaboration of EMU Food Services, Healthy Campus Initiative, Cultural Forum, the Department of Public Safety, and the Dean of Students office, The Buzz served 21 and older students, staff, and faculty an array of beverages and food pairings including beer from local brewery Ninkasi.

“I thought it went great,” says Allen Faigin, Director of EMU Food Services. “It exceeded my expectations. People seemed to enjoy themselves.”

Pub Night is only part of a new program called EMU Nights, which will bring movies, games, and other activities to campus after 5pm. Cultural Forum Director Laura Morris worked on the event in coordination with the new program Ducks After Dark (part of the EMU Nights umbrella), a double feature movie series that screens Thursday nights at Columbia Hall. “Professionally, it felt good to see my colleagues work on an entrepreneurial project that was realized and successful,” says Morris. “I also enjoyed meeting family members and partners of those I work with.”

The next EMU Nights is scheduled for May 3rd with a “Wild Wild West” theme. There will be Western trivia, grub, film screenings of True Grit and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a Fishbowl poker tournament, music provided by local band The Whiskey Chasers, and, of course, beer and wine. In addition to Ninkasi’s Total Domination IPA and Spring Reign, The Buzz will be serving red and white wine, Widmer Hefeweisen, Budweiser, Bud Light, Bud Light Lime, O’douls, as well as featuring Oakshire Brewing’s Hippie Town Brown on draft.
